Abstract : Cortical connections can be parsimoniously summarized by a structural model. The model is based on the systematic variation of the laminar architecture across cortical areas that can be traced to the timing of their development. The structural model predicts the presence, absence, strength and laminar distribution of cortical connections. Within this framework, cortical and subcortical pathways give the prefrontal cortex a holistic view of the sensory environment and the internal milieu of motives and drives. The prefrontal cortex also receives privileged information from the output of the basal ganglia and cerebellum through the thalamus, and innervates broadly the inhibitory thalamic reticular nucleus that gates thalamo-cortical communication. The structural model suggests dynamic recruitment of areas for flexible executive control, learning and memory, and points to nodes of vulnerability in psychiatric and neurologic diseases.
